These songs sound dated and, well, silly to me now, and seem to be only on the record for people who enjoy obscure musical scores. These are the songs playing while audiences are engaged in a film scene and are providing tension or filling out the mood of the scene. Case in point on Saturday Night Fever, we have three instrumental songs by David Shire, “Manhattan Skyline”, “Night On Disco Mountain” and “Salsation”. Not sure why they don’t just put the hit songs from the film on there as opposed to including every bit of musical score in the film.

I’m never sure why movie soundtracks have to be double records as with the Grease soundtrack and with Saturday Night Fever. The Bee Gees top it off with “You Should Be Dancin'” yet another hit for a band that was one of the best selling artists in the world in the 1970s. The song is infectious, there can be no doubt. The most disco song from the Bee Gees on Saturday Night Fever is “Stayin’ Alive”, with the classic disco bass drum with the delayed top hat. “Night Fever” might have been the biggest hit on the radio in 1977 and representative of the meteoric rise of both the film, disco, and the music of the Bee Gees. But the song has some multi-layered hooks to it, a songwriting skill that Gibb and his brothers were able to pull off with many songs. Then there is “More Than A Woman”, also covered by Tavares on this record, which features Barry Gibb’s uniquely, high falsetto. “How Deep Is Your Love” is a sticky-sweet ballad with more than its fair share of cheese too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Saturday Night Fever (it’s time I did) so I don’t know anything about the film except that it made John Travolta a film star and it involves Disco music and dancing. The album contains numerous other pop hits, including Kool & The Gang’s “Open Sesame,” and K.C. The Bee Gees wrote several songs for the now iconic soundtrack, including the instantly recognizable hit “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” “How Deep Is Your Love?”, and “More than a Woman.” They also penned “If I Can’t Have You,” which was performed by Yvonne Elliman. The film Saturday Night Fever (1977) followed Tony Manero (John Travolta), a young Italian-American man who becomes a fixture in the nightclub scene of 1970s New York.
